Hey guys! Thanks for checking out my blog. I have been keeping up with my husng results here since mid-2007 when I was first grinding the 33s. I am beating the 220s+ now and this blog has been (and still is) a big factor in my success. Check out my Hokie Coaching/Hokie Video/Hokie Twitter links to the right for more info. Thanks!

July/August Recaps

What up, degens? Been a while since last update. I've done a lot of micro-blogging via Twitter (pretty much daily)...I update mid-session etc. Check it out.

July: +11,995

Almost 12k month. Pretty solid considering my volume wasn't very good as always. Fortunately, I crushed in the games that I did play. Think I played about 400 total. Most of my games were played at 220s with some 200/300 and 4 mans mixed in. I feel good about how I played this month.

2009 Profit through July 31st: +86,914

August: +9kish through 8/24

Getting close to hitting 100k for the year. About 4k to go. I've pretty much made the jump up to being a 330 regular now. I don't plan to move down again since I am overrolled for the move. I should've done this a while ago, but I've never really forced things in terms of moving up levels. I just do it when I'm completely comfortable. I'm sure I've missed out on some profit bc of this, but it's made for a much less stressful career. I've been a bit more liberal with my shot-taking this month and have played a few sessions of 550 2s (and 550 4 mans). Really happy with how I'm feeling about my game. Hopefully I can put in a solid week to end the month and hit that 100k mark before September gets going.

Check out CWF blog under links on right. He's a dude I went to high school with. He's just starting to get his husng career going. We have been hanging out a lot frequently, playing at coffeeshops together and what not. Just living the dream. Cool guy, lots of potential. It's very motivating to have another poker player to chill with in real life. It doesn't really matter to me at all what stakes he is playing, it's just nice to have someone that is working towards the same goal as you. Another guy I have known from poker for a long time is moving down to Richmond in a week or so. Going to have a bit of a poker crew going, lol. Should be a hell of a time.

HokieGregPoker.com:

This is going to be my new blog/website starting in the next few weeks. I hired a webmaster and he is in the process of getting everything setup. The focus of the site is going to be on my video sales. Details are still in the works, but basically I will be producing a higher quantity of videos for a vastly reduced price per video. Sales will be done by monthly memberships somewhere in the range of 50/month (get 5 or 6 videos per month, plus video library of old vids). Going to have a forum to discuss hands/ask questions. Also going to connect the site with blog/twitter/coaching pages...so everything will be a little more streamlined that it is currently. Should be pretty cool. Stay tuned.

HUSNG.com Video Package

Hey guys.

I released some of my old videos (weeks 2-7) on husng.com. It's $40 total for 5.5 hours of videos. If my vids have been too expensive for you in the past, this is probably the best deal that you will ever get for them. HUSNG.com...top right of their main page is my video package...check it out.

I'm going to be producing a bunch of new videos over the next few weeks. I hired a webmaster to help me setup a more functional blog (all my blog history will be transferred to it). Also going to be setting up a video site that will allow you to buy my vids directly off of it using paypal.

The style of my videos will continue to be pretty similar. Mostly 2 tabling 220/330, pausing in key spots to expand my commentary, clear picture, no background noise, explaining concepts clearly/concisely, no bitching about bad beats (that tilts me a lot about some videos). Not sure about prices yet, but they will probably be changing slightly. I'm thinking of making a few low stakes vids, I'm open to ideas...post a comment and give me some suggestions.

Good luck.

June = Mediocre

Another month of not meeting my goals. Wanted to play 600 games, only played 380ish. I still had a +9.2k month, so no complaints here really. Would like to actually meet my monthly goals at least once this year though, haha.

I don't know what my deal is with volume this year though. It's definitely been a struggle. While I stand by my belief that quality of games is FAR more important than quantity of games, there still has to be a balance. Law of diminishing returns for you economists out there. I have not found that balance yet.

I am obsessed with playing only when I feel I am going to play my A game. I don't plan to start playing during the times when I am going to play worse than my A game, mainly bc I think that my C game really sucks. When I'm mentally "done" with a session, I spew really, really hard. I just need to continue working on expanding my ability to play my A game over a greater amount of games per month. Not sure what the answer is yet, but I have conquered numerous other mental leaks throughout my career through trial and error. Going to figure it out eventually. It's really the only thing that is holding me back from 25-30k months on a regular basis, imo.

I'm still twittering every day pretty much. I enjoy it. It keeps my days/sessions into perspective.

June Profit: +9,240

2009 Profit: +74,919 (12.5k behind pace for 175k 2009 goal)

Also, I am going to be releasing a 5 hour video package on husng.com in the next few days. It's videos that I have released several months ago, so if you've bought my videos regularly you probably already have these.

Quick Update

Not much to update really. Pretty standard, uneventful month on the poker front.

Up somewhere around 9k right now. Played some pitiful amount like 250 games so far this month. I'm hoping to end around 400 games (goal was 600...ugh).

I'm 26 as of yesterday. My last birthday I was starting to feel pretty old. This year I am feeling quite young.

Thanks for voting in my polls. Just wanted some kind of idea of who was reading. Also, had some sketchballs tell me I should stop tracking profit. No idea why. I'm liking the results of this poll so far, esp the 'quit poker and get a 9-5' votes.

Check out the book 'Mind Gym' by Gary Mack (sports psychologist). It is so much better than any Tommy Angelo/poker psych book out there. You can relate literally everything in this book to poker.

Most of my blogging (micro-blogging...w/e) is being done on Twitter now. I'll continue to update here once or twice a month to maintain the timeline/progression of my career. If you want daily details or want to see me brag about soul reads or how about how bad I think I play, then you'll like my Twitter.

Good luck.

Best Day of Poker Career

It's hard to believe considering how much I make per year, but I've never had a 3k day before.

That changed today with a sick +3068 day.

You can read details about the day on my Twitter page. Kind of funny that the day I start twittering I have best day ever. Sign of things to come? Or countdown til busto starting now?

May Total Profit: +16,489 (I think I did my math wrong on my monthly total yesterday...this is accurate)

2009 Total Profit: 65,679 (7.3k behind pace for 175k year, not bad considering I should move up in stakes at some point)

Good luck

I'm On Twitter, Obv

Twitter Link: http://twitter.com/HokieGreg

Started a Twitter page today. The plan is to update throughout each day...keeping track of results, monthly goals, my mood, some random advice, marketing vids...the works. Not sure if this is something I will enjoy doing long term, but could possibly motivate me and hold me accountable for some serious grindage if I get a supportive following =).

In other news, I'm starting a business with a friend. It's not related to poker and I can't really say anything about it just yet, but I'm quite excited about it. It's a passive investment for me...just fronting the money and getting lifetime % of company + small immediate return. Hopefully it works out. Probably putting 15-18kish into it between July-September. Won't kill me if we don't make anything, but certainly would slow down the process of moving up to 330+ for sure.

I'm looking for a webmaster to do our website for this business. Any webmasters looking for some work??? I would prefer to exchange coaching vids/one-on-one coaching in return for the production of the site. Email me some samples of your work to gtillerhokie@gmail.com. The site is going to be strictly informational, so won't be overly complicated or take too long to setup (no multimedia, etc).

Good luck.

Back to the Blogosphere

Judging by my hit counter, there are still a decent amount of you checking this daily. Impressive, sirs. \

I went 5 or 6 weeks where I really didn't play very much and when I did I ran bad/played worse. Just didn't feel like there was much worth updating. Fortunately, I have been getting back into grind mode and found my motivation again recently. Standard HokieGreg. I'm such a cyclical person. I go through phases unlike anyone else I know. When I am really into something, I'm REALLY into it. When I'm tired of something, I'm REALLY tired of it. Thankfully, 15k+ months are the ultimate motivator. I'm back.

"One of the most courageous things you can do is identify yourself, know who you are, what you believe in and where you want to go."

Along with a few other quotes, I have had this one written on a pad of paper I keep next to my computer the past 2 weeks. Being able to identify your strengths and weaknesses as a poker player is often the key to reaching your own "poker nirvana." You have to be able take an outside look at everything about your game and be honest with yourself about what you can improve. I think this is holding a lot of average players who understand theory on a high level from being highly consistent winners. Playing through auto-pilot, playing through tilt and trying to de-tilt without breaks, whatever it is. If this game was 80% strategy and 20% mental/discipline there would be a lot more croixdawg/dibasio's out there. We have to realize that it's the other way around.

I was skimming through some old blog entries today and I ran across this one. I feel like it could be very helpful for some of you who are having trouble grasping the mental discipline necessary for beating the games consistently:

"Lesson 1: Variance (upswings/downswings that are significantly +/- your longterm ROI) is a necessary evil for us to be successful!

The great thing about poker is that ANYONE can win over a small sample size and is thus blinded by the false hope that they can make a fortune as a poker player in the long run. The players who take this "bait" are the endless supply of fish that makes poker as profitable as it is. If the best player always won, poker would be the same as chess. In chess, the better player knows he is better than the weaker player and vice versa. The weaker player is not going to wager even money that he can beat the better player. The false hope that comes with short term positive variance is what keeps poker as profitable as it is. Be happy with your 58% winrate and focus more on longterm results.

Lesson 2: Poker players are naturally egocentric.

Most of us hope that our friends do well with poker, but, in the end, all we really care about is our own results. We don't really care to hear your endless bad beat stories. We will be there to help you through the rough patches if you want some criticism on your play. If you are looking "for a shoulder to cry on," you're not looking in the right place. A good poker player is a realist.

Lesson 3: If you are playing bad, TAKE BREAKS!!!!

You can not expect to win every session, every day, or every week. Sometimes you aren't going to be playing your A game. If you find yourself playing poorly, take a break. It helps tremendously. Most of the time, you will come back rejuvenated and you will have saved yourself from having to endure a marathon session in which you ran bad and played worse. Set a number of losses to stop playing for a few hours after (for me it's 5).

Lesson 4: Do not set short-term monetary goals.

It is setting yourself up for disappointment. Variance can be a bitch some days and you just aren't going to clear your $X/day goal. Set realistic non-monetary goals, such as playing X amount of games per month. If you play well, the results will follow!"

Anyways, a quick summary of my last 2 months.

Right now I am in Atlantic City, New Jersey with my family. We rented a beachhouse for 2 weeks a few miles outside of AC...no way I could stay in a casino for 2 whole weeks. It's been a lot of fun. I haven't played a ton of live poker...it's just so unreal boring and the thought of my hourly rate in a 2/5 game being abour $75/hr is just too tilting when i could play online and make double. So instead of grinding out live poker, I've hung out at the beach a fair amount, played some high-ish stakes roulette, drank a fair amount, and hung out with my family....not a bad alternative.

I'm pretty sure I'm comped at Borgata/Caesars/Tropicana for quite a while. My results: Borgata (-$1100), Caesars (-$1400), Tropicana (+$2800). Ship the $300 roulette profit, bitches.

One of my college friends came down the first weekend I was here. We went to Borgata and met some females. I had already been having some pretty sizable roulette swings throughout the day at other casinos. I had 3k that I was willing to busto or robusto on table games on this trip. We were hanging out at B bar and ended up getting really, really drunk with these girls. Before I know it, I'm standing with my 3k at a roulette table in the high stakes room (minimum outside bet $100...I was way too gone to try to figure out inside odds)....

$500 on black: Miss
$1000 on black: Miss
$1500 on black...OMG: HIT (woot)
...ended up running it up to like $7000
then $500 on black: Miss (6500)
$1000 on black: Miss (5500)
$2000 on black: Miss (3500)
...then I guess i lost another thousand on their regular tables somewhere else.

Wish I walked away at $7k, but I dunno...I really wanted to have 10k on the table!

I'm obviously capable of being pretty degen, but controlled degen so its ok. If I lost my 3k I wouldn't have made another table game bet on the trip. Busto or Robusto. F*ck grinding.

April: Total profit: +2995
I played mostly turbos and 4 mans, but only played like 300ish games. I played below average and ran really bad in April. I was probably a little spoiled by my 4 straight 10k+ months and wasn't used to running bad. When I sat down for a session and ran horrible, I just decided "screw it, I'll play later." That didn't work out well. Almost had my first losing month since I started this blog!

May: Total profit currently: +14,185
Finally back to the grind. May started off the same as May. Just running horrrrrible and was probably letting it affect my play some. Finally, I decided to stop being frustrated by poker, take an honest look at what I could do to improve how things were going, and things have been going a lot better since. Focusing more on just making correct decisions and putting in solid volume and staying focused while playing. I've been playing a mix of regs/turbos. Hit a nice upswing the past 2 weeks and am really pleased with how I'm thinking about the game right now. Hopefully I can put together a couple more good days and finish the month +15k.

2009 Total Profit: +63,665 (including fpps, propbets, table games =), sportsbets)
